Sylvia, my grandmother, inspired the creation of Sylvia Studios. She was born in 1911 on the island of Manhattan and grew up amongst other first generation northern Italian Americans. Since she lived with my family from the time I was born until I left home for college, I spent many afternoons at her side making ravioli, pasta verde and apple pies. She was a culinary craftswoman I greatly admire. She never used a recipe or wrote down ingredient lists for her creations. The way the dough would lift off her wooden board told her the mixture was just right. I feel the same way about the process of creating visual arts and hope to carry on her memory in this endeavor. Please enjoy these images from her private album!
